I think in class we last left off with discussing how the main character wasn't "insane," but rather, as Eliana said, doing what was most "comfortable" and "normal" to her and what the author's purpose in creating a character like that was, and we also talked about how if she were insane, it was a gradual process.

Anna brought up that perhaps it wasn't insanity overtaking her, but perhaps depression and I agree with those who thought her deterioration was gradual and I also agree with Anna that it could've been a severe case of depression.

In the text, the beginning stated that her husband said she wasn't 'sick' and that her brother ('also of high standing') agreed she wasn't sick, but rather a 'slight hysterical tendency'. Later on though, she writes that "John says if I don't pick up faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall" and how she dreads going there because he is just like John and her brother (both men who don't listen to what she says or how she feels) but only more so.

The part that made me think she was depressed was that she said "I cry at nothing, and cry most of the time." This, for me, gave some credibility to John's statements and in turn, made me feel less certain about the narrator's statements. (I say the narrator and not 'Jane,' because I think Jane is John's sister's formal name and that 'Jennie' is a nickname for Jane.)

Also, Kyle brought up that he didn't think that the author intended to make his piece a feminist piece of literature and both he & Nichole mentioned that perhaps we're looking too hard looking for things that support our beliefs.

I have to say I disagree with that and I thought that the author did intend to prove some point about the woman's role in society.

I believe the narrator is used to show the author's attitude on social conventions. Lily and Darlene talked about how society's norms back then were a lot different than now--such as women writing being acceptable, etc. I completely agree. The narrator stated that she wrote in spite of what others thought but having to be sly about it exhausted her.

We can tell that the author realizes the social conventions and the role of the woman. She does this by having the narrator mention things like "[John] is so wise" and "he is very careful and loving." Any flaws of normal Victorian conventions, the narrator rationalizes by saying that she is to blame--"I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes." When her ideas are scoffed at, she writes "John laughs at me, but one expects that in marriage." When her condition improves, she explains that she's been eating better and she is "more quiet than [she] was" as if having a voice was a bad thing (which for women in a Victorian society, it was.)

I think the oppression she feels is implicitly understood to be from her husband when she mentions John later in the story. John, who used to be described in such a positive light, "pretended to be very loving and kind" and "the fact is, [she is] getting a little afraid of John."

As John is out more and more, I felt that perhaps John was like Torvald when he found out what Nora had done and wanted to keep up that image that his family is perfect. I think maybe he probably gave the pretense that he was on a vacation with his family when in reality, he just wants his wife to be shut out and out of contact from the rest of the world.

Nathaniel mentioned that the wallpaper was like a mask and when she was ripping off the wallpaper, she was taking off that mask, and I thought that idea to be brilliant. I can start to see that maybe the wall is symbol of the narrator herself and that the wallpaper mask she puts on to stay in line with society's norms. At the end when she mentions that "I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can't put me back," I perceived that to mean that she no longer wishes to be like the lady creeping behind the wall and covered with wallpaper meant for aesthetics and to be seen, rather than heard.

Sorry for the blob of text. There were a lot of good points made in class that I took notes on, but didn't get to mention during the socratic.

Pg. 65-79

In the beginnings of the novel, the narrator linked Marlow to a Buddha, a wanderer, and an interesting English man.

This is both a foreshadow and a foil to Kurt, who only spoke, but never listened, an adventurer of the Congo, and English man as well.

Snake, mouse, and two hens.

Pg. 79-93

“these were strong, lusty, red-eyed devils…”

Before Marlow became a steamboat skipper he said that the color red was always good to see at anytime, yet at this point in the novel he equates red with perverted lust of the natives. HYPOCRISY

“…in and out of rivers, streams of death in life, who’s banks were…thickened into slime…”

Conrad is alluding to Coleridge’s Ryme of the Ancient Mariner. The two hens that caused the death of the slave is the albatross as Marlow is to the Mariner.

Ants.

Pg. 125-133

“We must help them [women] stay in that beautiful world of their own, lest ours get worse.”

Marlow alienates himself from women and views them only as assets to men. This revelation explains why he casts away the witch-doctor and the Intended as inferiors.

Hippo.

Pg. 133-151

“She walked with measured steps… She looked at us all as if her life had depended on the unswerving steadiness of her glance. Suddenly she opened her bared arms and threw them up…as though in an uncontrollable desire to touch the sky.”

Marlow compared this woman, the second woman to appear in the book, as a version of a witch doctor. Witch doctors preform rituals and sacrifices to the gods to appeal to the gods. At first, the reader perceived this woman naive and overly careful, though before she disappears it is revealed that the man of patches would have shot her if she came aboard the steamer.

The savage has become the conquered and the civilized have become the conqueror.

Pg. 151-164

“She came forward, all in black with a pale head, floating towards me in the dusk.”

It seems like Conrad was referring to Death when Marlow described Mr. Kurtz’s Intended as a ghost-liked figured adorned in black, simply floating towards him, as if she was this sinister being who wanted to get into his veins and consume his flesh.

But why would Marlow refer to Kurtz’s Intended as an ominous figure when he thought of his aunt as an excellent woman for procuring him a river-steamboat?

Conrad has condescending views of women because the narrator he cannot logic how the women are out of touch with the truth. This could indicate that women cannot be trusted and they present themselves as unearthly beings— out of reach for men who are obviously very much in touch with the truth.

Besides being a figure that the Outer Party can channel it's anger at, why is Goldstein a necessary part of the Inner Party's control? In Part three, chapter three Obrien says to Winston, "Goldstein and his heresies will live forever. Every day, at every moment, they will be defeated, discredited, ridiculed, spat upon - and yet they will always survive." Wouldn't it be easier for the Inner Party to pretend that Goldstein doesn't exist and pretend that nobody can go against Big Brother and the Party?

Why did Orwell break up the story into three parts?

I am currently reading a mystery murder novel called Angels Flight by Michael Connelly. It is about a LAPD police dectective, Detective Bosch, who is trying to solve a murder case of a famous civil rights lawyer Howard Elias, who specializes in cases that deal with prosecuting police who are accused of police brutality. I am halfway through the book and at this point Dectective Bosch is in the Victim's office in which Bosch is watching the local news which is covering riots that have broke out because of the murder of Howard Elias, and Bosch is talking to another lawyer who was friends with Howard Elias.

I read Battle Royale by Koshun Takami which takes place in an alternate timeline where Japan is known as the Republic of Greater East Asia. Basically, a group of 42 Japanese high school students go on a "study trip" and they are abducted and put on a secluded island. On the island, they have to kill each other and the last student that survives gets to leave the island. It is an intense novel and I had no problem reading it entirely because I couldn't put it down. There is a lot of action in the novel and if you like reading about kids trying to kill each other in different ways, this is the book to read.

I also read House by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker and is a Christian fiction horror novel. It starts off with a young couple getting stranded on their way to an important meeting and they end up in a deserted inn. There, they find another couple with similar circumstances and they get trapped in the house by a madman. They have to play a game according to the madman and his rules. They go through an underground maze and encounter all of these wierd things and it tests their faith in God. While I barely found out that this book was a fiction novel when I started reading wacky stuff and the end, I thought that it was a good read. I didn't like the fact that it was fiction and it took the horror part out of the novel for me.

Mr. T's 1984 Discussion AP12 period 6

Please discuss any relevant points you have about 1984, extending our class discussion today.

Vaporization
When someone is vaporized, all records of his or her existence are destroyed, but the person still physically exists. The Party assigns sinecures to vaporized people to try to isolate them from their former colleagues and friends, but they may still see other physically, like how Winston saw Ernest, Rutherford, and Jones in Chestnut Tree Cafe before.

However, nobody in that society, except rebels like Winston, acknowledges any vaporized person's existence because to do so would entail thoughtcrime and lead to one's capture by the Thought Police. The citizens do that using doublethink: even though they physically see the vaporized person, they adamantly believe and say that he or she doesn't exist.

During Winston's torture, O'Brien tells him that the Party controls history by controlling all records and all of people's minds. Vaporization fills both of those criteria, so the person has truly never existed in that society because there is no proof even though he or she physically exists.

After his vaporization, Winston still remembers the people he met before, like Tillotson, and vice versa, and he can approach them, but they will not respond to him in fear that they will be vaporized for thoughtcrime. He can also interact with vaporized people like Syme, people whom he was never close to, but he will not do it because it is thoughtcrime, and he could be captured again.

Winston's interaction with Julia at the end of the book is thoughtcrime, but in line with the complexities of Oceania's laws, anything that demonstrates the power of the Party and Big Brother is ultimately beneficial. Winston and Julia basically break up at the end, saying that they don't love each other or even want to be friends or acquaintances anymore. Because of the dramatic change in their relationship, this conversation ultimately shows the strength of Big Brother, and thus, the Thought Police will not arrest him for this infraction. Finally, before the conversation, Winston even says that he doesn't care whether or not there were hidden microphones. If people don't care whether or not they are being monitored, then they are absolutely sure that they aren't doing anything wrong, as in Winston's case.

I am going to read Lord of the Flies by William Golding for the novel that I'm tested on and Catch 22 by Joseph Heller as an outside reading book. Lord of the Flies interests me the most out of the six books because it pits stranded students against each other in self-government and was the inspiration for Battle Royale, a movie (and a book) I have seen segments from on YouTube. Catch 22 is one of the most famous satirical novels, a genre that I should be more familiar with, and I prefer it to Gulliver's Travels because it is more recent and more realistic, talking about a U.S. soldier in WWII rather than a protagonist who visits the fantastical lands of Lilliput and Brobdingnag.

I just finished a simple book called Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Carl writes colums for the Miami Herald and is the author of many best-selling novels for adults, including Sick Puppy and Basket Case. Hoot is a story about a middleschool aged boy named Roy Eberhardt who moves from Montana to Florida and is trying to fit in with the kids at school. He is bullied on the bus and is picked on a lot. One day while he was on the bus on the way to school he saw a boy running through neighbors back yards and he didn't ave any shoes on. Roy is curious and follows him one day and ends up in a junkyard. The running boy threatened Roy to not follow him again and this just made Roy even more curious. Roy gave the boy a pair of running shoes and that was a start to their friendship. The running boy's step sister goes to Roy's school and they slowly become friends and introduces Roy to her brother. This misterious boy is causing mischief over at an empty lot where a pancake house is to be built. The builders are putting their business over a bunch of burrowing owls and they are trying to cover it up as fast as they can. Throughout the story Roy, the running boy, and his step sister Beatrice do all they can to stop the progress of the building of the pancake house. A the end of the story the kids had rallied a bunch of people together to help their cause to save the owls and it was successful. I really liked this story because it was a cool and interesting story to see how much people care for a cause and to what extents they will go to.

I just started to read Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. A couple of my friends have read this book and they said I have to read the book around five times in order to understand it all, but to be honest I am totally looking forward to it. This book seems worth it. But so far the the author is telling a story of Billy Pilgrim, the main character, and he is a World War ll veteran. He is writing a book about Dresden. He goes to visit an old war buddy Bernard V. O'Hare to see if he can give him some interesting stories to put in his book. Both guys are drawing blank on any good stories worth putting in his book about Dresden. I can't wait to finish this book and interpret it my in my own way.

Hey, well since I can't find any other topics here it is.

Well I have two questions/comments

1)I wanted to know what you guys thought the importance of the narrator's brother.

I believe that he represents the beliefs of the society, society in general. Since the narrator also describes him as "a physician, and also of high standing." She makes the comparison between her brother and John (represents husbands?) Also towards the end she makes a comment on the wallpaper "sticketh closer than a brother" which i believe to be mocking the relationship between her and her brother. Since her brother should be the one that understands her the most, however he still believes that she needs this treatment, in turn representing the unchanging views of society.

2) "It was nursery first and then playroom and gymnasium, I should judge; for the windows are barred for little children..." I was wondering why Gilman talked about the transitions between the rooms.

My belief on the topic is that she uses it to show the reader that, women have grown up (the nursery, birth) believing in the social norms for a woman. Even advancing through the various ages, from the playroom (childhood), to the Gymnasium (teens), and still remain as adults (the bedroom, which is currently) trapped by society.

Mitchel Char Period 2

Hi folks!

I hope that you’re enjoying your holiday break. Eat, sleep, READ, and be merry, right? I also trust that all of you are *TOTALLY* enjoying the book, so far.

The Awakening is one of Kate Chopin’s most celebrated stories. When we read “Story of an Hour” we acquired a taste of her ironic and fiercely feministic writing—which belies her claim that she was neither a feminist nor a suffragist. (Fox-Genovese) The following website (http://www.loyno.edu/~kchopin/) offers a great resource for those of you wanting to hone your background concerning the political climate and the social conventions of the era in which the book was written. You can arm yourself with info about Southern culture, women’s issues, and related figures of the time (pay particular attention to Charlotte Perkins Gilman—she’ll show up in a second).

In addition to The Awakening, you will be reading a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman called “the Yellow Wallpaper.” The complete e-text can be found at the following website: http://etext.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/GilYell.html.

Okay, on to the nitty gritty…
This assignment is three-fold.
1) You will generate ONE original post based on anything (from The Awakening) that interests or intrigues you. Here are a few posting options:
a. An opinion about the book, a section of the book, a specific passage
b. A question about something in the book that confused you
c. An open-ended question that invites your classmates to pipe in their opinions
d. An observation about a theme you notice developing
e. A comment on Chopin’s writing craft, or any literary or rhetorical devices she's using and why
2) You will generate ONE original post based on anything (from “The Yellow Wallpaper") that interests or intrigues you.

a. An opinion about the story, a section of the story, a specific passage
b. A question about something in the story that confused you
c. An open-ended question that invites your classmates to pipe in their opinions
d. An observation about a theme you notice developing
e. A comment on Gilman’s writing craft, or any literary or rhetorical devices she's using and why

3) You will respond to at least ONE of your classmates’ comments (on either piece). Avoid chiming in with a simple "I agree." It's fine to agree, but please add something substantive to the discussion. Perhaps you could expand upon the original point? Here are a few ideas:
a. A request for clarification of another student's post
b. An answer to another poster's question
c. Further offer of proof (textual evidence) to support another’s post
d. A respectful challenge to another’s point of view, offering textual evidence as support

Okay, so maybe it’s four-fold….

Please copy and paste your three postings into a Word document (single spacing is fine). You will submit this hardcopy on Monday, January 4th. Monday, you will also take a short Quest—you like that?—quiz/ test, which will cover both the novella and the short story.

GENERAL POINTERS:
• Click "REPLY" at the bottom of the post you're addressing. Do NOT click "new topic." Remember, when you post, be clear, specific and precise. The most persuasive opinions are supported by evidence—textual evidence, so quote away and cite chapter and page numbers when you do. Explain how the quotation you've chosen supports your opinion.
• As with all assignments, it is imperative for students to explicitly delineate between their own original thoughts and those ideas borrowed from another person. This assignment demands that you compose your own original thought—not regurgitate ideas from another source. Taking ideas from other sources, without proper citation is a violation of the Honor Code.

• It makes me sad when students search the “Net” for others’ readings of the book. What’s the point of that? To look smart? People, please. Give yourselves some credit. You don't need anyone to explain this book to you. Your reading/ analysis is what interests me.

Did you know that we have a Debate Club at FVHS? Actually, it has existed for at least 4 years, probably even more. Last year, nearly all the members either graduated or left, so I decided to try to restart it. It kind of worked. We have a decent following on facebook, but really, not much more than that. Not many people have heard of our club, which is a bad thing. I know we have students who are globally aware, politically alert, and...

OPINIONATED!

Without a doubt, even on this forum, many people have political, social, even general beliefs that they would like to express!

If you're interested, we have meetings at lunch, on Wednesdays, in Mrs. Chaicharee's room, room 405. We also have a group on facebook, so check it out!

Any thoughts, comments, or concerns? Just post them here! Thanks.
